When testing any new airplane, like the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the Boeing Test & Evaluation team leaves no stone unturned in making sure the plane performs safely, even under extreme circumstances. Few tests exemplify this more than what is referred to as “abuse takeoffs” or “engine-out” testing
In order to achieve certification, the 787-9 was subjected to a crosswinds test that required flight test engineers on “wind watch” to scour the globe looking for airports with properly windy conditions.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-range, mid-size wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Its variants seat 210 to 330 passengers. Boeing states that it is the company’s most fuel-efficient airliner and the world’s first major airliner to use composite materials as the primary material in the construction of its airframe.
As one of the First Officer’s onboard Air Canada’s 787 Dreamliner, Marc-Antoine Plourde was truly born to fly.
